THE CERAMIC WALL BOX

with Debra Fritts

Debra is a figurative ceramic artist, well known for her expressive human and animal forms that utilize unique painterly techniques with nature inspired colors, and her immensely popular workshops in Abiquiu and abroad. Her artwork can be seen in national art publications, and is highly collected.

“ Take time to look.” is a quote by Georgia O’Keeffe. In my studio we will construct slab wall boxes and discuss ideas for ‘painterly surface’ inspired by our natural surroundings in Abiquiu. Creating an interesting surface will include the addition of clay as relief, carving into the clay, mark making into the clay, and painting with underglazes and oxides. The wall box will be fired and available for pickup the following evening or shipped. No experience in clay is required. There will be an hour to get lunch at Bode’s, or the Abiquiu Inn.

Oaxaca, Mexico, and he is a local expert on Georgia O’Keeffe. His artwork is widely exhibited.

“I first put in emotion and expression. Next I cover it up, then I put in silence….” - Moshe Kupferman.  We will create small collages using onsite imagery of the landscapes of Abiquiu and surrounding areas. We will return to the studio and make collages using the light, forms, and colors that inspired us. “Colors do not belong to the landscapes, they belong to my emotions.” - Georgia O’Keeffe.
