Abiquiu is 50 miles NNW of Santa Fe, NM. Driving time from Santa Fe is about an hour, and about 2 hours from Albuquerque.
Abiquiu is part of the high desert biome, and the extreme southeastern part of the canyon lands. Its elevation is ca. 6,000–6,500 ft. Summers can be hot, but seldom exceed 90°F for prolonged periods; winters usually have highs in the 30's–40's. The Autumn is particularly beautiful time with pleasant weather.
The region is home to many Native American pueblos and cliff-dwelling ruins. By some estimates, the population in 1400 AD was ten times what it is today. Today it is a vibrant region of three cultures: Native American, Hispanic, and Anglo-American.
